The Basics of Child Safety Seats
2f - Booster Seats

A booster seat or a "belt positioning booster" is just that. Its primary purpose is simply to position your child properly so the vehicle safety belt system will fit and work correctly.

There are three types of booster seats. There are no-back boosters, high-back boosters and combination seats (for information on these see "Combination Car Seat/Booster Seat").

No-back boosters are seats that boost your child up off the vehicle seat, but have no back on the seat itself. One of the factors in the proper use of  positioning a booster is whiplash protection. If the vehicle you are using has a head support and it comes up above your child's ears, then a no-back booster should work. If not, then a high-back booster should be used.

As the name implies, a high-back booster has a seat back. This can provide whiplash protection, and on some models can help in positioning the shoulder belt. The high-back booster can provide better support than a vehicle seat when the child is sleeping.

Booster seats in general are much easier to use than other child safety seats. However, they too must be used correctly to properly protect your child. For information on how to properly use your booster seat, please read "Booster Seat" in the "How Your Child Fits in the Car Seat."

Booster seats must be used with Lap/Shoulder belts. Under no circumstances is it okay to use one with a lap only seat belt.

Please note: Most states have booster seat laws. In most (if not all) cases, using best practice will not only protect your child, but it will also keep you in compliance with the law. However, you should check your local laws. See "The Law" section of this web site.
